The Douglas Bader foundation has teed up some great prizes for the inaugural ‘Bader Challenge’ charity golf tournament, being held at Lingfield Park Golf Club. 18 teams of golfers, including one amputee golfer per team will tee-off on Friday 19th September 2007.
This charity tournament is being organised by Kiera Roche, and is intended to raise funds towards the running costs of the Amputee Games and the placement of Interactive Information Kiosks at Disablement Service Centres.
Douglas Bader was a keen golfer with a handicap of 5, and the reason we have chosen golf as our fundraising medium for this event.
Looking forward to the big event, the Douglas Bader Foundation’s President and experienced golfer, Lady Joan Bader said,
"This is an excellent way of encouraging amputees to participate in a sport which Douglas was very fond of, in order to raise money for a vital community projects which help themselves and their fellow amputees. We are pleased that we have been able to help."
Director of Operations and organiser of the Bader Cup and Ladies Salva Golf Tournaments, Keith Delderfield said,
‘Golf is a great leveller, it’s a sport where each player is given a handicap and therefore promotes inclusion by proving players with a disability with a level playing field. Participating amputees can compete against other amputees and their able-bodied teammates and competitors knowing they have an equal chance of winning the competition. Sport aids both physical and mental rehabilitation and provides amputees with the opportunity to excel at something increasing their self-confidence and self-worth.
Kiera Roche, said: "We have had a great response to the golf tournament and it looks like there is going to be some stiff competition. We are delighted to be in a position where we can encourage amputees and the heathcare professionals who support them to work together in a fun and conducive environment to raise invaluable funds to aid the rehabilitation of others.
