DBF Launches the Limb Loss Information Centre

Lady Bader, OBE, President of The Douglas Bader Foundation, Officially launches the first UK Central Information Website for the limbless.

Lady Bader OBE, wife of the late Group Captain Sir Douglas Bader and President of the Douglas Bader Foundation, the registered charity founded by Douglas’ immediate family and friends following his death in September 1982, today officially launched the Foundations’ latest initiative, The Limb Loss Information Centre Web Site.

The key objective of the new web site is to provide a central source of information to answer the many questions an amputee or their family, friends, carers, employer may ask or may need to make informed choices.

In addition to providing a knowledge base of information, the new site will provide community facilities such as chat forums, newsletters, and feedback/contact mechanisms.

The site includes accessibility options to allow the greatest number of people to access and use the site to fullest advantage.

‘As the official first visitor to the new web site, Lady Bader said ‘ I am very pleased that the Douglas Bader Foundation has, with the support of The Sir Jules Thorn Charitable Trust, been able to create and develop this much needed information resource and I know Douglas would have been very proud.’

David Richings, Director of The Sir Jules Thorn Charitable Trust. said,The Sir Jules Thorn Trust is delighted to have been able to provide funding for such an innovative project. The Douglas Bader Foundation has created a unique facility that will certain to provide a wealth of easily accessible information as well as a rare opportunity for its users to share thoughts and ideas. The web site has exceeded our trustees’ expectations and we wish it great success.’

The site is now officially open and will be promoted to individuals with limb loss via the rehabilitation Centres around the United Kingdom over the next few weeks. It can be viewed by visiting: www.limblossinformationcentre.com.

We now want to go to the next stage. The Foundation’s next goal is to find funding to provide physical access to the Limb Loss Information Centre within the rehabilitation centres in the form of touch screens,’ stated David Bickers The Chairman of The Douglas Bader Foundation and Douglas’ son – in – law.

The work on the Limb Loss Information Centre began in March 2005, after

securing funding from the Sir Jules Thorn Charitable Trust.

Our objectives when creating this site were to:
• Build a central source of information available to answer any question an

amputee or their family, friends, carers, employer may ask or may need to make informed choices.

• Provide a national forum for limb service users to enable them to voice their needs and requirements.

• In conjunction with other support agencies, create a template for establishing and managing a user group. The site will provide the user groups with a national forum to share information and ensure that you, the users are receiving useful and consistent information.

• The website will have a primary focus on the community and will, in addition to providing a knowledge base of information, provide community facilities such as chat forums, newsletters, product feedback and feedback/contact mechanisms.
