Fred's Story
Fred was manually removing ingredients from some blades of a machine when they started to rotate, crushing his right hand. The blades came to rest against his throat and it was 2 hours before 50 year old Fred was released. He underwent an amputation of his right arm below the elbow and had further operations to reduce sensitivity of the nerves.
The medical evidence indicated that Fred would continue to suffer sensitivity and that there was nothing further that could be medically done to assist him. He also suffered severe Post Traumatic Stress Disorder. Fred was particularly self conscious about the replacement limb provided by the NHS, and it was suggested that due to the sensitivity of the nerves an electric limb was unsuitable.
A member of the Limb Loss Legal Panel obtained a report recommending that an electric limb could be fitted with a gap to avoid contact with the nerve endings and that there were also three different but very realistic cosmetic limbs which reflect changes in skin tone throughout the year.
